Following a 54-50 home victory over Chicago State on New Year's Eve, the Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team moved up one spot to #4 in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25.
Gonzaga remained #1 in the poll yet again and claimed all 31 first place votes. Wichita State moved up to #2 and Northern Iowa slipped to #3 after losing to Evansville last week. The Phoenix and Stephen F. Austin rounded out the top 5 with fellow Horizon League member Valparaiso just outside at #6.
Other Green Bay opponents in the top 25 include #10 Evansville, #13 Georgia State, and #17 Florida Gulf Coast. The Phoenix are 3-1 against teams listed in this week's poll.
Green Bay held steady at #5 in this week's Mid-Major rankings from The Catch and Shoot. Gonzaga, Wichita State, Old Dominion, and Northern Iowa make up the rest of the top 5.
The Phoenix did fall two places in the weekly Mid-Major Madness Power 15 this week, falling from #8 to #10. This poll includes Atlantic 10 Conference teams, which make up 4 of the top 10 teams. Gonzaga once again took all the first place votes, followed by Wichita State, VCU, Old Dominion, and Northern Iowa completing the top 5.
Green Bay opened Horizon League play on Monday night by steamrolling the Wright State Raiders 79-55 at the Resch Center to improve to 12-3 and 1-0 in conference. The Phoenix will travel to Milwaukee on Friday night to face the UWM Panthers. Tip-off is at 8:00 and can be seen live on ESPNU.
