The Green Bay Phoenix moved up to number 15 in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll this week, up six spots from 21 a week ago. A thorough dismantling of Minnesota-Duluth helped the Phoenix move up the poll as Green Bay notched a 92-57 victory behind Alec Brown's triple double, the third in program history.
So far, the only real test for the Phoenix has been a hard fought, 69-66 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers, who are now ranked in the top 10 in the nation after improving their season record to 6-0. Other than that loss, the Phoenix have dispatched two Division 2 schools with relative ease.
That will surely change this weekend as the team heads to Anchorage, Alaska for the 36th annual Great Alaska Shootout. While the tournament lacks the big time, traditional powers of days gone (past champions include Kentucky, Marquette, Purdue, ect), this year's tournament features a solid lineup of mid-majors, many of which are included in this week's Mid-Major Top 25 poll.
Green Bay opens the tournament on Thanksgiving night with a clash against Pepperdine from the West Coast Conference. That game can be seen at 8:30 on CBS Sports Network. The Waves are 4-1 and are not included in this week's poll, but the Phoenix next opponent, either Denver or Harvard, are both included in this week's poll. Denver finished 22-9 a season ago and finished 2nd in the Sun Belt Conference. Off to an 0-2 start this year, the Pioneers still check in at #16 in this week's poll, one spot below Green Bay. Harvard comes into the tournament with a 4-1 record, with their lone loss coming in their last game against Colorado. The Crimson are ranked #5 in this week's poll. The other four teams in the Great Alaska Shootout are Alaska-Anchorage, TCU, Tulsa, and Indiana State. ISU checks in this week at #4 in the Mid-Major poll after a road win at Notre Dame.
Other Green Bay opponents checking in on this week's Mid-Major Top 25 poll include Youngstown State at #17 as well as in-state rival Milwaukee out of the top 25 but receiving votes. Wichita State remained #1 in the poll with Gonzaga also receiving first place votes.
